Sundays

A day of rest can mean whatever I want it to mean. I guess I always thought that the Sabbath was very black and white just like the Pharisees did when they approached Jesus after he healed the invalid man on a Sunday (or Saturday?). I love how Jesus so frankly responds, “My Father and I are always at work.” Ha!

God created the Sabbath for rest, and however I perceive rest is left up to me. My soul is most nourished and comforted when I spend a Sunday at home by myself, but my friend’s soul is most nourished and comforted when she spends her Sunday with a close friend. And I love that we can both be doing completely different things, but it is still restful.

I chose to spend this particular Sunday on something that I have neglected for a while now. Almost a year of an extremely tense work environment (I finally got a new job–yay!) led to stress which led to adult acne (WHY) and no desire to work on my own projects. But He tells us, “And I will make them and the places all around my hill a blessing, and I will send down the showers in their season; they shall be showers of blessing” (Ezekiel 34:26). I have finally chosen to receive His blessings. They are so, so good.

My planning process started out with me wanting to make a coat out of neoprene (a structured, synthetic material) or wool. Twenty-something degrees warmer weather and several visits to different fabric stores later resulted in me changing my mind. Neoprene wasn't available and wool ran $40 a yard––nope. I went with bleached linen for my project because it's a perfect summer fabric and I love the natural crinkle texture it has.

I've always loved experimenting with textiles, which is why I wanted to dye the fabric myself. I chose a burnt orange color. However, like most cases when dyeing fabric, I didn't get the exact color I was hoping for. You win some, you lose some.

But it turned out beautifully none-the-less.

My work station consists of a mini West Elm desk (my most beloved possession), an old 1970s sewing machine, and lots of miscellaneous crap.

The coat transitioned into a kimono, but I love the relaxed look of it (and all that crinkle).

And there is no use for a kimono without good, hefty pockets.

Thank you for reading. Have a restful week, friends!
